Does Texas Have State Income Tax?

No. Texas is one of only nine U.S. states with no state income tax. This means your Texas paycheck is only reduced by federal income tax and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) there’s no separate state withholding line on your pay stub. This is one of the main reasons take-home pay in Texas is often higher than in states with comparable salaries but active state income tax, such as California or New York.

What Taxes Are Deducted From a Texas Paycheck?

  • Federal income tax (based on your W-4 filing status and income bracket)
  • FICA taxes: 6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare (1.45% + 0.9% Additional Medicare on income above $200,000)
  • Pre-tax deductions: e.g. 401(k), health insurance, HSA/FSA
  • Post-tax deductions: e.g. union dues, loan repayments, garnishments

There is no Texas state income tax line, since Texas does not collect one.

Texas Minimum Wage 2026

The minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour in 2026  the same as the federal minimum wage, unchanged since 2009. Texas ties its minimum wage directly to the federal rate rather than setting its own, and state law prevents individual cities from setting a higher local minimum wage. Tipped employees can be paid a lower cash wage of $2.13 per hour, as long as tips bring their total earnings up to at least $7.25/hour; if they don’t, the employer is required to make up the difference.

Average Salary in Texas

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the average hourly wage across all occupations in Texas is around $26/hour. Actual pay varies significantly by city and industry for example, tech and energy-sector roles in Austin and Houston typically pay well above the state average, while entry-level service roles are often closer to the state’s minimum wage.

Texas Paycheck FAQs

How much tax is taken out of my paycheck in Texas?

Since Texas has no state income tax, only federal income tax and FICA (7.65% combined for Social Security and Medicare) are deducted from your paycheck, along with any pre-tax or post-tax benefits you’ve elected. Your federal tax amount depends on your filing status, income level, and W-4 settings.

Is overtime taxed differently in Texas?

No. Overtime pay is taxed at the same federal tax rates as regular income. Because overtime often pushes a single paycheck higher than usual, the withholding on that check may look larger but it’s reconciled with your actual tax liability when you file your annual return. Texas overtime rules otherwise follow the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Why is my Texas paycheck higher than a friend in another state?

If your friend lives in a state with income tax (like California or New York), their paycheck has an extra state withholding deduction that yours doesn’t. For the same gross salary, a Texas resident typically takes home more per paycheck simply because there’s no state income tax line to subtract.
